Emotional Wellness

The emotional dimension of wellness refers to your ability to effectively manage your thoughts, feelings and incoming stressors in an manner that enables you to maintain a positive emotional state where you feel content, joy, love and happiness.

Emotional wellness is ability to feel good about yourself, achieve a positive and optimistic attitude, high self-esteem, a strong self-image, and to create and maintain satisfying relationships.

It is also the ability to respond resiliently and effectively to changing emotional states and effectively cope with a wide variety of situations that present challenges and obstacles.

An emotionally well person is able to enjoy life and be successful. Emotional wellness is an ongoing dynamic process of change and growth.

Your emotional wellness is closely interconnected and easily affected by a disturbance in anyone of the other dimensions of wellness including physical, mental, spiritual, social, financial, occupational, environmental, and intellectual. Each aspect of wellness affects the others. This interconnection is especially true between mental and emotional wellness. Mental Wellness is how well our brain-mind is physically and operationally functioning and any problems, even little ones can cause havoc on our emotions.

It is said that the brain has a mind of its own in that it creates and runs away with all kinds of thoughts and desires without you consciously participating. The brain can take control at any time and seems to go in and out of conscious and subconscious modes even while we're awake. This is apparent when we daydream or hallucinate thoughts throughout the day.

The brain lies to us for various reasons including to protects us from an external entity. It also lies to us to protects us from ourselves so we don't have to confront or deal with something it believes is damaging to us. For example, the brain may manifest a (real) physical problem to avoid dealing with an emotional problem even though you believe you can and prefer to confront with the emotional problem.

Your perception, attitude, what and when we eat, how much and how well we sleep, good and bad habits, exercise and spirituality all play a vital part in state and health of your Emotional Wellness. All addictions, emotional and many internal physical problems come from deficiencies or imbalance in the brain's (neurotransmitters) computing operations.

  • The following strategies can help you develop and increase your emotional wellness state.
  • Change starts with your awareness, willingness and intent to alter and modify in your lifestyle.
  • Take some time to ponder and think about your current emotional state and behavior patterns and repetitive cycles. Ponder on your intent to create a healthier state of emotional wellness in your life.
  • Unless steps are taken to end thoughts of insecurity, depression, negativity and replace them with new thoughts and feelings of optimism and empowerment, it's difficult to change deep rooted patterns and repetitive cycles that are traps designed to keep you in place as a victim filled with emotional instability and insecurity.
  • If you're addicted to something or depressed about something or someone, you will first need to change your perspective, which will change your perception, which will change your opinion, which will change your attitude of things. Changing your perspective, perception, opinion and attitude will change your reality.
  • Changing your emotional state may impossible especially when you are depressed or addicted. It's a catch-22 because most people feel powerless to make positive changes while being held down by a dominating force.
  • The answer starts with your willingness to look at and change those beliefs and assumptions, and by adding or modifying many small changes in your lifestyle.
  • The term "Fake it until you make it!" means to make-believe until it becomes reality. Change your thoughts and actions by consciously tell yourself things until it become a habit. Accomplish the "fake it until you make it" strategy by using positive self-talk.
  • Use positive "self-talk" to become more conscious of your internal dialogue and its content thereby allowing you to change your thoughts and actions and finally put a stop to the vicious catch-22 negative cycle your currently in. The term "self-talk" (mental talking or inner-talk) is the act or practice of talking consciously to oneself, either aloud or silently. Positive self-talk allows you to start talking more control over your thoughts, emotions and actions.
  • Understand that you can neutralize your situation and experience by changing your perception through self-talk.
  • The first step toward change is to listen to yourself and become more aware if your negative and/or positive self-talk.
  • Tell yourself to "Stop" when you notice you're saying something negative aloud or in your mind.
  • Replace a negative thought, word or statements with a milder, neutral or positive one.
  • Change negativity to optimism whenever possible.
  • Change self-limiting statements to questions. Change "I can't handle this!" to "How can I handle this? or "This is impossible!" to "How is this possible?".
  • Proper, well-balanced nutrition will help stabilize your brain and body.
  • Breathe deeply whenever possible.
  • Humming and signing can help clam.
  • Laughter is a great for you. Laugh whenever possible. Find humor. Laughter exercise - laugh for one minute once an hour.
  • Change your thoughts through your actions. Staying active will help energize and invigorate you.
  • Bringing more positive energy into your life by exercising on a regular basis.
  • It's said that music touches the soul. Play and listen to music very often.
  • These are all important aspects towards achieving a high state or optimal level of emotional wellness.
