Between Normal and Abnormal

We know that normal is the opposite of abnormal, but when it applies to people, it's sometimes hard to determine where normal behavior leaves off and abnormal behavior begins.
 
Life is dynamic, varied, and complex for each of us. What is perceived as normal by someone, tends to vary somewhat by time, place, and situation throughout their lifetime. In other words, what is perceived by someone as normal now, can change, depending on their situation.
 
And, what is considered to be normal behavior in one society, may be considered abnormal behavior in another society. The same thing is true with regards to history. What was once perceived as normal, might now be considered abnormal by today's standards and its' society.
 
The lines of abnormal vs normal behavior can also vary by category. For example, the lines of abnormalities are especially blurry when it comes to sexuality and certain types of thought processes.
 
Beyond that, abnormal behavior must be so obvious and blatant, that it stands out well beyond from what other people consider to be acceptable and normal behavior. Only when we come across a person with a severe, chronic personality disorder, that has trouble managing and coping in situations and with people, does their dysfunctional behavioral problem become obvious and crystal clear.
 
Anything less than the obvious dysfunction, we tend to write off as a person who is normal, but has issues. Behavioral abnormalities are not always visible. It is often hidden in plain sight, mixed in with other functional treats, to appear to us as a normal person, with a few dysfunctional characteristic flaws. Society tends to view and label those folks as normal with issues. This type of behavioral trait and pattern can vary greatly between each person, thus making it difficult to distinguish between someone who has issues, and someone who is downright crazy.
 
This is the case with a lot of people who can function, but experience significant problems and limitations in dealing with relationships and social activities. Life itself tends to be very different and difficult for these folks, in that they tend to be moody and self-destructive. They periodically have explosive episodes of what seem to be uncontrollable dysfunctional behavior towards everything and everyone. Afterward, they usually revert to their more normal personality, as if nothing happened. They will often start off as the aggressor, and then become the victim, without even knowing it. Although they are present, their reality on how they view things, their judgment, and memory is at times skewed.
 
The in-between category
These are the people who fall in between the people that are normal, and the people that are abnormal. Most people fall somewhere in between normal and abnormal. The so-called "normal" people are not so normal in that everyone is imperfect and dysfunctional throughout life. Perfection is out of the question when it comes to personality traits and behavior. It simply comes down to the persons' degree of how bad and how often their dysfunction occurs within a givend period of time.
 
Being imperfect starts to explain why we often tend to struggle with dysfunctional thoughts and feelings. It's normal to have mixed thoughts and feelings from time to time, but when is it too much, do the thoughts become abnormal?
 
Too often, people with dysfunctional behavioral issues, or with a personality disorder, have trouble in social situations, but they will often blame others for their social issues. To them, they believe that they're normal, functioning individuals, and that someone else is to blame for the disturbance and drama that magically appears every time that they are around.
 
To complicate matters, most people tend to be stubborn and close-minded to what other people tell them. Their refusal to hear and accept that they have a problem is part of the problem. As a result, they will often create behavior patterns of ongoing instability such as mood swings, and reoccurring compulsive thought processes.
 
Am I in the in-between category?
Chances are if you don't have a severe personality disorder, you fall somewhere in-between the normal and abnormal categories. It's the most common of the three personality categories. It's a very big category with a broad range of behavioral personalities, characteristics, and traits.
 
Is the in-between personality category considered normal?
Everyone within the in-between category is considered normal. The in-between personality category is very wide in scope, and contains unclear and blurry lines when it comes to defining a persons' personality position. Even a person who has some issues maintaining healthy relationships can still fall within the range. The fact that we’re all imperfect, results in accepting various types of dysfunctional behaviors as being normal. 
 
What can I do to identify my personality flaws?
It’s helpful to check in with yourself to see how you feel, and how you're doing. 

Take some time to look at your life and your state of mind, and how you are feeling. Be honest with yourself and notice the areas of your life that you’re neglecting or that need improvement. Don't become overwhelmed or afraid by your findings. Everyone needs to improve every area of their life-wellness.
 
Practice observing your thoughts and the decisions that you make without passing self-judgment.
 
It’s always a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional that can assist you in your quest to live a healthy, happy, and successful lifestyle.
 
Acknowledge
Accept what you find out about yourself, and strive to make improvements whenever possible. Work from the perspective of improving how you are right now, instead of from the point of view of how it should be, because life isn't always how it should be.
 
Your ability to separate yourself from your thoughts and feelings, while you observe yourself, will allow you to become clear-headed about your thoughts, intent, and behavior.
 
Self-Examine
Notice if you’re difficult or awkward in social settings. Learn to observe and monitor your thoughts, intentions, and behavior at various times throughout each day.
 
Yourself Questions
Ask yourself questions, and answer them honestly, without shame or fear. The sample questions listed below can help you get started.
-- Is your self-talk positive or negative? 
-- Are you moody? 
-- Do you become easily overwhelmed and anxious?
-- Are your thoughts filled with hate and anger?
-- Are you depressed?
-- Are you pessimistic or optimistic?
-- Are you kind to yourself or do you self-sabotage?
-- Are you calm or nervous?
-- Develop a list of questions that will motivate you.
 
What can I do about my thoughts and behavior?
Everyone has issues and challenges that they must confront and overcome in life. Do what you can to help you become a better person, a better human being. You may also want to consult a healthcare professional that can help you put things in perspective.
 
Introduce new healthy routines and activities into your daily life. Do them consistently every day, without developing an obsession. After a while, the new healthy routines will become deep rooted habits that can remain a part of your life.
 
Eat nutritious, tasty meals, exercises often, and getting an ample amount of sleep are also an important part of good physical and mental health.
 
What are my overall objectives in living a normal life?
 Part of your overall purpose in life is to maintain good physical and mental health for as long as possible. Learn to maintain a vibrant, peaceful, and fruitful lifestyle that allows you to reach your optimum potential. Continue to participate actively and invest in all aspects of your life-wellness categories.
