7 Simple and Effective Tips for Healthy Eyes

It is heartening to see an increasing awareness among people about the importance of health and fitness. However, when it comes to general well-being, people are usually more concerned about things like body weight, BMI, levels of cholesterol, physical fitness etc. While these things are definitely important we often miss out on the health quotient of a vital organ of our body-Eyes.

With a rise in number of hours during which our eyes are exposed to screens - be it television, computer or mobile phones, the fatigue levels are sure to see a surge. The need of timely and proactive measures for eye-health in such times cannot be stressed enough.

Here are 7 simple to follow and extremely effective tips which will help boost the health of your eyes:

1. Observe the 20-20-20 rule:  Continuous and long screen hours cause long-term damage to eyes. While it may not be possible to entirely avoid screens, following a simple rule can keep eye strain at bay. This rule is known as the 20-20-20 rule. According to it, for every 20 minutes spent gazing at the screen, you should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will provide a brief relaxation period for the eyes. You can also set a reminder so that you can follow this rule diligently.

2. Take care of your lenses:  If you are already using lenses, chances are that you might feel the eyes strained all the more throughout the day. Taking care of your lenses is the key. Keep them clean, wash them regularly and avoid wearing contact lenses while sleeping. Use a good quality cleaning formula or solution. Avoid over-using your lenses and replace them as and when required. Keep a check on the expiry dates of any eye related product. You might want to consider undergoing a painless LASIK surgery for vision correction if maintaining the lenses is a cumbersome task for you.

3. Stick to a healthy diet:  It is no secret that a balanced diet is the key to good health. Vitamin A and carotene-rich foods work wonders for the health of your eyes. Include pumpkin and carrot in your diet as they are great sources of these nutrients. If you prefer a non-vegetarian diet, eat fish at least twice a week as it is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids - a must for eyes. Leafy vegetables, dairy products, citrus fruits and nuts also provide sufficient nutrition to the eyes. Along with a healthy diet, consume lots of water to prevent the eyes from drying.

4. Use protective eye wear:  The harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun can cause immense damage to the eyes. Being out in sun might feel wonderful but ensure that you do not step out without wearing good quality sun-glasses to keep your eyes protected. Similarly, it is necessary to keep your eyes guarded with appropriate safety eyewear while playing any sport or undertaking any outdoor activity which might harm your eyes. If you use any digital device for a prolonged period of time, wear lenses or glasses with anti-glare coating.

5.Do not Smoke:  The numerous types of damages smoking causes to your body are already widely known and written about. However, among its lesser known harmful effects on your health is deteriorating eye health. Researchers have revealed that smoking can damage the delicate optic nerves, eye muscles and small blood vessels thereby increasing the chances of eye-related diseases.

6. Get your eyes checked regularly:  A detailed eye examination by a certified ophthalmologist at least every two years is highly recommended. It will not only help detect early signs of degeneration if any but will also guide you in taking timely corrective measures if required. So, a regular vision test will benefit you in many more ways than merely confirming that the prescription for your eyeglasses is up to date.

7. Exercise:  Eye exercises are mostly aimed at strengthening eye muscles, improving focus and stimulating the vision center of the brain. Simple exercises like blinking, palming your eyes, practicing zooming and massaging (not rubbing) your eyes help keep them relaxed and moist. A proper undisturbed sleep of at least 8 hours daily is equally important. While these activities may not necessarily improve eyesight, they are sure to prevent fatigue and strain of your eyes.
