5 Tips to Take Care of Your Braces and Teeth During Orthodontic Treatment

Taking care of your teeth can be one of the most challenging tasks once you get braces. They have tiny spaces which trap food leading to a build-up of plaque and many other dental problems. It is very important to brush your teeth after every meal, to rinse with mouthwash and floss regularly. Though, this may sound like a tedious routine but neglecting oral hygiene can lead to serious oral health problems and result in stained teeth. Poor oral hygiene has a negative impact on teeth and gums and this is even more so when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Dealing with the fact that you have braces or are going through any form of orthodontic treatment is in itself extra work and effort on your part, so why add to that by not making sure you are diligent with your dental care. Taking good care of your teeth and gums may take extra time but it’s worth it.

Here are 5 steps you can take to care for your teeth when you get braces:
1. Invest in an Electric Toothbrush – Food can accumulate in the nooks and corners of your teeth and braces, which makes it more important to brush twice a day. Electric toothbrushes work very well and make brushing with braces easier and to a big extend safer for your teeth, braces treatment and your gums. Electric toothbrushes are more effective at reducing levels of plaque and gingivitis as compared to manual toothbrushes. They are also gentle on your teeth and gums while being more effective in cleaning your teeth and mouth.

2. Avoid Sugary & Sticky Foods – Foods and drinks such as ice-cream, pies, cakes and soda do not help in maintaining oral health. The bacteria in your mouth that form plaque loves sugar, so it is important to brush and floss after you eat or drink something high in sugar. Sugary foods can also cause carries and cavities and that is just something you want to avoid at all costs when you are going through orthodontic treatment. Sticky foods like gummy bears, peanut butter, caramel and dried fruit, should be avoided when you are eating with braces. These types of foods can stick to your braces and trying the get the food off of your braces can not only be tricky, but can also result in breaking the braces. So, be aware of what you are eating.

3. Floss Everyday - Flossing with braces is a strenuous task. But tools like floss threads can really help. Use waxed floss, dental tape or products which are specifically designed to clean around your braces. Thread the floss carefully under the main wire before passing it between two teeth. Do not snap it but gently move it up and down and slowly remove it before moving on to the next pair of teeth. Ask your orthodontist for a demo if you are not getting the hang of it and they can help you get the process down. Then, just be patient and keep practicing and soon it will become second nature.

4. Use a Mouth Rinse – The gums get very inflamed for some with braces and some can also suffer from sensitivity as more plaque accumulates around the brackets during orthodontic treatment. Using mouth rinse is as important as brushing and flossing since it helps keep the gums healthy. Make sure you check with your orthodontist and use a mouthwash that is recommenced by them to ensure maximum benefits.

5. Wear a Mouth Guard During Sports – If you play sports it is important to be able to continue playing even after getting braces. A specifically designed mouth guard can fit comfortably over your braces which will protect your teeth as well as braces from any damage during the activity. You definitely can play any sport without a mudguard, by why would you want to risk it?

It is extremely important to see your orthodontist regularly while you’re going through any sort of orthodontic treatment. They will adjust your braces according to the changing shape of your teeth which is very important for the success of your treatment and also suggest any other changes, or give you the right advice that you might need.
