If you are about to get braces or are already wearing them, it is essential that you know the right practices so that caring for braces and your teeth does not become a challenge for you.

If you keep some simple things in mind regarding oral care, appropriate orthodontic products, braces-friendly foods and the importance of dental visits, you can protect the braces and your teeth which will reward you with a perfect smile. So let’s understand these criteria:

Follow a Proper Dental Care Routine
The importance of a good dental care routine cannot be stressed enough. It becomes all the more crucial if you wear braces. The structure of braces is such that it creates more opportunities for food particles to get stuck.

Hence, you should also brush after you have had mid-morning or afternoon snacks. Doing so will help remove the trapped particles and reduce the risk of cavities. Use a soft and compact brush and make sure that you clean under the wires of the braces also. Regular flossing between the braces, under the wires and rinsing with a mouthwash should also be a part of your dental care routine.

Make Use of Proper Orthodontic Products
Cleaning the brackets and wires in your mouth requires some extra effort but it need not weigh you down. The process of cleaning your braces can be simplified with the help of appropriate orthodontic products which are easily available in the market. These include waxed floss threaders, interdental brushes, antiseptic rinses and topical pain relievers. For instance, waxed floss slides more easily between your teeth as compared to the non-waxed variety.

Eat Healthy Braces-Friendly Foods
What you eat is very important when you are wearing braces. Learn about braces-friendly foods. These include soft cheeses, yogurt, soft fruits such as melon, kiwi, grapes, banana, mashed potato, pastas, steamed veggies, completely cooked rice, pudding and other such foods. Ask your orthodontist about more such food options.

Do not eat or drink sugary, hard, chewy, gooey or sticky foods such as sodas, popcorn, nuts, hard candy, taffy or gummy bears, ice, hard breads and bagels, hard fruits, corn on the cob etc. These can not only harm your teeth but also damage the structure of braces and cause immense pain. You should also drink plenty of water.

Do Not Miss Your Orthodontic Appointments
If you get braces, your orthodontist will plan your dental visits in advance. Make sure that you don’t miss any of those visits. Periodic checkups, cleanings and adjustments are important to ensure that your braces are doing their job correctly. These visits will also help your dentist examine that whether or not your teeth are healthy and detect any early signs of problems with the teeth or the braces. This can help you prevent a lot of unwanted hassles, especially with the braces.

Follow the above listed simple practices and your braces won’t seem a tough challenge to deal with. If you have more questions regarding oral care while wearing braces, consult your orthodontist. He or she will be able to guide you better about how you can deal with braces and get a perfect smile without struggling with them.
