What is mental and physical fitness?
In order for a person to be well-adjusted, healthy, and achieve their full potential, they need to reach and sustain the best mental and physical fitness state possible. Fitness can be defined as the ability to function efficiently and effectively, and to be healthy to resist disease, and to cope with challenging situations as they emerge. The optimum level, or state, of mental and physical fitness and well-being is unique for each person, and often depends on and is affected by a variety of factors, including their mental and physical condition, attitude, habits, behavioral and emotional conditioning, social abilities, environmental state and resources, situations, and financial status. Too often, the mental and physical fitness level and the factors listed above seem to feed into each other, creating a cycle, or pattern, that is often difficult to break. Only by improving your mental and physical health and fitness level can you improve one or all of the areas in your life. Please disregard the last two sentences if you're already perfect ;-)

What is the difference between mental and physical fitness?
The idea that mental and physical fitness go hand-in-hand is a widely know concept that is often referred to as the mind-body connection. The physical health condition of our brain directly affects the way we think, and what we think and feel has a powerful influence over our bodies and overall health. In fact, the mind is capable of improving health, or destroying it. It is so powerful that it can actually create physical problems and illnesses in the body, or heal them.

Why is mental and physical fitness important?
The benefits of being mentally and physically fit are tremendous and truly life-changing. Mental wellness and physical wellness can be considered the foundation to everything else, and the two most important major areas of life-wellness. The level of mental and physical health throughout a person's life defines their experience, perspective, and quality of life.

Why is physical activity and exercise important?
Regular physical exercise and activity is one of the most important things that you can do for your health. Exercising promotes and enhances wellness, well-being, and overall health. In simple terms, it helps you live a longer, healthier, and happier life. Any controlled physical exercise or any controlled physical exertion that gets the heart pumping, move blood around your body and increases the blood flow to the brain is healthy for you.

Physical activity and exercise offers these benefits:

  • The increased blood flow carries oxygen and glucose to provide energy to vital organs, muscles, and the brain. The extra blood flow can help regenerate and grow new cells, and creates a more healthy environment for your body and brain to flourish. Exercising helps clean the blood, remove waste products, and remove impurities from the blood in the liver. Exercising helps the body eliminate toxins through the lungs and through the pores of the skin when you build up a sweat.
  • It helps your breathing and strengthens your lungs. It's important to breathe fully and deeply throughout the day, and especially during exercise and physical activities. Become aware and mindful of your breathing during exercise. Holding your breath while exercising could be dangerous, unless you're swimming. Breathing is both a conscious and subconscious process. Train yourself to breath fully and deeply, but also allow your subconscious to go into its automatic breathing mode on a regular basis. Pay attention to your body and be aware of your breathing, especially during exercise and vigorous physical activities.

  • Gives you more energy, strengthens muscles and bones, increases flexibility, improves endurance and stamina, improves sleep, controls weight, and reduces stress, depression and anxiety.

  • Hormones such as endorphins and serotonin are released into the body during exercise and vigorous physical activities. Serotonin regulates mood, prevents depression and makes you feel happy. Endorphins can make you feel good and reduce your anxiety and your sensitivity to pain.

  • Even sleep can be enhanced by exercise. When people exercise, they tend to fall asleep sooner, sleep more soundly, and their uninterrupted sleep is longer. The health benefits of sleep go way beyond just feeling better in the morning. While you sleep, the body goes into maintenance mode, focused on repairing and recharging all the systems and things it can't do while you're awake. The brain is very active during sleep, and getting good restful sleep on a regular basis promotes mental well-being. Sleep allows the mind to unwind, and brain chemicals such as serotonin, norepinephrine and histamine play distinct roles in regulating sleep. According to several studies, serotonin and norepinephrine affect muscle tone, keeping the body still at night, while histamine controls wakefulness. Sleep is a healing process that allows the body to replenish, rejuvenate, and regenerate itself. It's important to quiet your mind before going to sleep.

  • It can help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and helps to control blood pressure. 

  • The right amounts strengthen and protect your heart, lungs, bones, muscles, and joints, especially as you age.  

  • Increases and maintains flexibility, muscle mobility, and improves your range of motion in your joints.  

  • Weight control is another benefit of being physically active and exercising on regular basis. Weight loss has a lot to do with burning more energy than you consume. Exercise and physical activity makes you burn energy and build muscle, which raises your metabolism, making it easier to lose weight. 

  • Exercise stimulates the immune system to fight and protect you from disease and illnesses.  

  • A healthy amount of physical movement can improve your mental health, helps you feel upbeat and stabilizes your mood. It can also help improve your coping skills and ability to handle stress, and minimize any side effects and leftover residue that is negatively infecting you.  

  • It can help improve your ability to perform daily activities and lowers the risk of functional imitations. It can also help prevent injuries and disease.  

  • It helps you feel better about how you look, thereby improving your self-esteem, self-image, and self-confidence. 

The bottom line is that you'll benefit from healthy exercise and physical activities. Use exercises to energize and invigorate your day, stabilize your mood, and to make you feel and look healthier. It can help increase your chances of living a longer, more content and happier life. The fact is that the effort is well worth it, and the benefits are worth the investment.

After research across the resources available on the web, the AAC team noticed the absence of a centralized resource designed to help understand the basics of mental health, alcohol use and addiction within this demographic and offer guidance on navigating support systems.
